Ensuring Success

Because you are not sterile right after your vasectomy, temporary birth control is needed until 2 follow-up semen samples confirm that no motile sperm are present. You will be given 3 lab requisition sheets (you will likely only need 2) requesting tests, 2 months and then 3 months after your procedure. You present a lab requisition sheet to the lab with your semen sample produced at home within the previous hour. You can call the main phone number of the lab to find the nearest lab to you. You do not need to bring your semen samples back to our offices, we appreciate that it will likely be much more convenient for you to bring your semen sample to one of over 100 labs whose addresses are listed on the back of the requisition sheets. Some physicians advocate testing after 6 weeks and 15 ejaculations.

We do not advocate this practice because we have concerns that a patient may show no sperm at this time although have an early recanalization (reconnection) 2-3 months later that could be missed. That is why many physicians encourage their patients to do their testing at the 2-3 month mark.

By the time of the first sample, two months after your procedure (and after at least 20 ejaculations), 70% of men are sterile. By the second sample, three months after your procedure, up to 95% of men are sterile. A few percent of men may require up to six months and repeated samples to confirm sterility. These tests are very important!

The chance of a sperm passing through the blockage in the sperm tubes is extremely small, especially once the sperm tubes are cut, cauterized and then separated by the fascial sheath barrier. But failure is possible; the incidence of failure is estimated between .1% and 1%, and varies with the skill and experience of the operator and with the approach used to block the tubes. It is for this reason that testing semen samples is essential. Dr. Pollock is proud to report an outstanding success rate of better than 99.9% in the last 7000 surgeries. Dr. Pollock has also had an extremely low complication rate which is another hallmark of a skilled surgeon.
